Introduction

Living in an old house with walls several feet thick means that getting wifi access throughout the building is a challenge to say the least. One solution would be to buy a couple of routers that support WDS but rather than do that I decided to use some old equipment that I already had at hand. The objective was to setup Linux on an old laptop as wifi hotspot that would hopefully be able to connect to my existing wifi router through WDS. Unfortunately given the limitations of the equipment I had at hand, using WDS was not going to be possible. However without giving in I succeeded by configuring the laptop to connect to my access point at the other end of the house and connecting a spare access point to the laptops ethernet port. Here's how I did it.

  • Toshiba Satellite 1400 - 1.2Ghz Celeron, 384MB RAM
  • Broadcom
